M.U.O.S. and NRTF-8: Risks

The electromagnetic radiation of the MUOS system would fall below the threshold enforced by the Italian (6 V/m) law only beyond 130 Km from the military base, along the main transmission beam. Nonetheless, non-negligible contributions cannot be excluded to the surrounding areas. Moreover, the electromagnetic field induced by the the existing antennas in the base should be added to that produced by MUOS. Effects of EM fields on human beings as well as on environment are known. Radiation from the military base could have biological effects and could endanger wildlife in the parks, as well as on the whole territory close to Niscemi. Sanitary effects due to prolonged exposition to EM radiation can be, just to cite a few, cancer, leukemia, cataract, fertility reduction. Less vascularized tissues are particularly exposed, being more sensitive to termal effects of radiations. Children and aged people are notoriously more endangered.

The effects on the ecosystem of the Sughereta and Bosco di Santo Pietro natural parks are difficult to predict. Nonetheless, it is widely known that bees, whise activity is fundamental for the biological equilibrium of that ecosystem, are particularly sensitive to strong electromagnetic fields. The radiations might also have an impact on agriculture, since EM fields influence plant growth.

The EM field induced by the transmission systems in the base could interfere with electronic devices, especially with wearable medical devices and electronic devices in hospitals. Moreover, the microwave beam generated by the MUOS system can interfere with flight instruments. The beam would pass at about 6500m over the Comiso airport, well below the cruising altitude of civil aviation. This would impose a no-fly zone of about 35 Km from the MUOS station, during transmission. This would also affect routes from and to the Catania airport, with consequences on tourism and local economy and on the right to mobility, especially on a prolonged crisis scenario. A similar scenario happened during the war on Lybia, when civil traffic was banned from the Trapani-Birgi airport.
The beam can also cross the skies over the Gela Gulf, which is a common route for migratory birds. Hence, MUOS can impact migration of several bird species.

Finally, a word for peace. One of the four ground stations of the most advanced USA telecommunication systems is installed in Niscemi, Sicily. Should we feel more secure? We think it obvious that our land will become a critical military target.

To sum up, the No MUOS movement opposes the installation of MUOS because of potential dangers for: human health, the ecosystem of the Sughereta park, the quality of agricultural productions, right to mobility and to the development of our territory, right to peace and security in our homeland.
